Apple Laptop : Please take care!

AJAY KKUMAR 2 Comments 340 Views

Dear Friends,

I made payment for  Apple Laptop on 8th Nov and took delivery the next day i.e 9th Nov. I received the machine in fully charged condition so obviously I did not try to charge it immediately. On the same day after using for two hours I tried to charge the machine and found that it is not charging at all and also showing that the " Battery Not Charging". I immediately contacted the Apple person for replacement of faulty machine but he informed me that this is now an issue of "Service" and not pertaining to " Sales" as the sale is already done and asked me to give back the machine and now the machine is sent back to Vishakapatnam for checking the machine hardware status and doing necessary remedial action. So I request you check these things so that you need not have to go through this painful process and loosing the fun of owing a Mac.

I will keep you informed the updates on this issue.

Regards,

Ajay Kumar Kotha.

To bite the Apple or not

A X PARAPULLIL 5 Comments 422 Views

We had a demo of DELL, Apple, Lenovo and HP at Karaikal on 23rd & 24th October'13. For many, including me, MacBook Air was the first choice. But I ended up booking  Dell. Here are the reasons why;

  1. MacBook Air does not have the following as stipulated by our circular
    • Does not have win 7 pro / win 8 pro. (Remark: Win OS can be dual loaded. But we have to buy it (Rs 6k-7k extra) and install it.)
    • RJ45 port (Remark: Even though adapter is provided free by Apple, they conveniently forgot to bring it to Karaikal. We then provided an adapter, but they still could not connect even with the OSX drivers from CD available. No confirmation from any region about LAN connectivity for MacBook Air)
    • SAP could not be loaded even in MacBook Pro. (Remark: 1. They said that a paid version of SAP is available for OSX and attempts (by whom?) are in progress for acquiring this. 2. Alternate is said to be - install windows 7pro / 8pro and then SAP)
    • An issue of Network Access Protection also exists
  2. No clarification regarding the above issues from ONGC.
  3. Other Issues

          - Generation of processor not known-rumours are that it is 2nd gen (Remark: They were very secretive in this regard)

          - No HDMI port (Remark: Thunderbolt cable not provided (Rs 2500/- extra). Also any adapter eg. Thunderbolt to HDMI, would cost another Rs 2500/- extra)

         - Two USB 3.0 ports only. (Remark: They could not conclusively state that connecting older printers/ DVD writers etc. with older versions of USB would not be an issue)

         - MacOffice is free (but not licensed copy). (Remark: Iworks to be bought from apple store. Each module (Word, Excel, PPT etc. would cost Rs 1000/- each)

         - Prices of Macbook have been reduced by US$ 200 to 300 in the international market as of 23/10/13. However, still not in India. Also the announcement says that the new OSX ‘Mavericks’ upgrade and  Iworks will also be free (Remark: Apple dealer here could not confirm this)

        - Even laptop bag is not provided and costs extra

The last straw was when the Apple dealer, on being repeatedly asked about the generation of processor, instead of giving a direct answer, replied “When you buy a BMW, you do not ask what engine it is having”

These observations are for your guidance only. It is not for belittling Apple.  I am not responsible if someone takes a wrong decision based on the above.

Regards

Laptop scheme 2013 -A Nightmare

Laptop scheme 2013 floated is not in line with the availability of the products in the market. No company in the market is offering 4 years warranty/ amc. If this was not in the condition of the buying a laptop, all of us could have buy the laptops our own and in time. Now we are dependent on the various offers from the companies and their specified models again limiting our options to buy the laptop also the delivery of the laptop is still not confirmed again we have to depend on the companies and force to buy a laptop with out seeing them physically. Amendments in this regard is requested from the management.

Limitation on buying Apple Mac Laptop

Himanshu Gupta 1 Comment 546 Views

A. As per the Laptop Scheme 2013, Operating system of the Laptop needs to be compatible with Microsoft Windows environment with in ONGC. Operating system of Apple machine is OS-X i.e a customized macintosh which is way different from Windows. Due to which there are some limitations of using the Apple Laptops in ONGC Office environment

          1. It does not comply with the Computer Policy defined in Windows environment through Active Directory.

          2. Network Access Protection (NAP) policy (which checks that the system connecting to ONGC network is healthy or not) is not compatible with Apple which will restrict the use of Laptop in ONGC Network

         3. MAC needs separate version of MS Office Application. In addition to this some other enterprise softwares and applications may or may not function.

B. To use this Laptop in ONGC office environment, User has to buy MAC with Microsoft Windows operating system license in addition to MAC OS to make Windows Compatible.

Laptop Buying Guide 2013: 8 Essential Tips

By Mark Spoonauer, LAPTOP Editor in Chief| Apr 15, 2013 11:30 AM EDT

Courtesy  Article published in Laptop magazine you may readou can budget more, you’ll get a system with better build quality, longer battery life, a sharper screen and stronger performance. Here’s what you can get for each price point.

  • $400 to $600: For well under $600, you can get a notebook with an Intel Core i5 or AMD A8 CPU, 4 to 8GB of RAM, and a 500GB hard drive, all respectable specs. However, at this price point, most notebooks have cheap plastic chassis, low-res screens and weak battery life. However, at this price point, most notebooks have cheap plastic chassis, low-res screens and weak battery life, but you can occasionally find a touch screen.
  • $600 to $800: As you get above $600, you’ll start to see more premium designs, such as metal finishes. Manufacturers also start to add in other features as you climb the price ladder, including better audio and backlit keyboards. You may also be able to get a screen with a resolution that’s 1600 x 900 or higher and a flash cache.
  • Above $800: At this price range, expect notebooks that are more portable, more powerful or both. Expect higher resolution screens, faster processors and possibly discrete graphics. The lightest, longest-lasting ultraportables like the MacBook Air and Lenovo ThinkPad X1 carbon tend to cost more than $1,000. High-end gaming systems and mobile workstations usually cost upward of $1,500 or even as much as $2,500 or $3,000.

8. The Brand Matters

image

Your laptop is only as good as the company that stands behind it. Accurate and timely technical support is paramount, which is why LAPTOP evaluates every major brand in our annual Tech Support Showdown. This past year Sony came in first place, followed by Apple and Samsung.

Support is only part of what makes a notebook brand worth your money. You also have to consider how the manufacturer stacks up to the competition in terms of design, value and selection, review performance, and other criteria. In our 2013 Best and Worst Laptop Brands report, Apple placed first, followed by Lenovo and ASUS.
